The corn fields of Ohio and the rolling grasslands of the United Kingdom are an ocean apart and have little in common. But Cedarville University professor Dr. Glen Duerr is bringing the two together by teaching students the British game of cricket.
On Tuesday, Duerr, chair of Cedarville’s department of history and government and professor of international studies, hosted an event for students to learn the game of cricket. This event held on the lawn next to the Apple Technology Resource Center.
Duerr, born in the United Kingdom, has held multiple events of this kind for Cedarville University students. Teaching the game allows Duerr to connect with students while creating the opportunity to bring international studies to life through cultural engagement. Interacting with culture outside the classroom allows students to personally value international studies through experience.
“While teaching students cricket may be fun and interesting, it also helps me to educate them on important international relations topics, including diplomacy and working with foreign leaders,” said Duerr.
To enhance the cultural appeal, an assortment of British and American foods were provided as refreshments during the game.
The game of cricket consists of pitches and a wicket (upright posts in the ground with a horizontal post, or bail, across). Two teams compete, switching sides from batting to fielding throughout the game. The winner is determined by which team has the most runs by the end. To score a run, the pitcher must knock the bails off the posts without the fielding team getting a dismissal.
