An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale hit near the town on Lone Pine in East-Central California. The quake struck about 10:40 am Pacific Time.

Lone Pine is in Inyo County, approximately 175 miles northeast of Los Angeles. Lone Pine is a sparsely populated area with only a few thousand residents.

Several aftershocks have occurred, the largest being 4.4, according to the US Geological Survey.

Though classified as a moderate quake, it was felt far and wide, from Sacramento to Las Vegas, likely due to the shallow depth of the quake, at only 1.8 miles.

In 1872, the Owens Valley earthquake, also known as the Lone Pine earthquake, registered 7.9 on the Richter scale, and is one of the largest to ever occur in California.
