A 6.4 magnitude earthquake shook California residents awake along the state's North Coast and North state regions early Tuesday morning. Widespread damage has been reported. Items have fallen off shelves, multiple rockslides over roadways and the bridge to the town of Ferndale is closed after rupturing in four places. Other minor road damage has been reported, and additional bridges are being checked for damage as well.

Two people have been reported injured following the earthquake, which occurred about 2:34 a.m. near Ferndale, a small community in Humboldt County about 220 miles northwest of San Francisco.

It was followed by multiple aftershocks, one registering 4.3 magnitude.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office warned residents to be prepared for aftershocks.

“Due to a large earthquake, widespread damage to roads and homes are reported throughout Humboldt County. Be prepared for aftershocks. Check gas and water lines for damage or leaks. Exercise caution if traveling.”

Over 70,000 customers lost power in Humboldt County.

State Sen. Mike McGuire tweeted that safety evaluations would be taking place following the earthquake. Utility companies are making safety evaluations of both their gas and electrical systems.

No tsunami treat is expected with this earthquake.
