Monika Kelly spoke with Joshua Bates, Interim Deputy Director and Equity Manager for Portland and Multnomah County's Joint Office of Homeless Services about systemic racism contributing to homelessness. Things like redlining, housing discrimination, mass incarceration all impact the possibility of becoming homeless. All of the programs that are funded through the Joint Office are required to demonstrate equity in their services and their organization. Home for Everyone is a community advisory structure to end homelessness. The committee is comprised of a variety of elected leadership and even people who have experienced homelessness as well as a committee committed to racial equity.
