LOCAL Closer Look: Appalachian Prison Book Project

Hot Topx

Glen Motto talks with Lydia Welker, Digital Communications Coordinator of the Appalachian Prison Book Project, serving from the Morgantown area providing free books and educational support to people who are incarcerated across Appalachia—specifically West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, and Maryland. Welker discusses the organization’s services including mailing free books to those in prison and supporting higher‑education opportunities behind bars. She also outlines APBP’s mission and future plans to expand college programs in prisons. She shares a powerful story shows how one legal resource they mailed changed a life. Welker also tells us that the paperback dictionary is the most requested book. (appalachianprisonbookproject.org)
