LOCAL Closer Look: CASA of Kosciusko County (Warsaw, IN)

Hot Topx

Sarah Shaver interviewed Erin Rowland-Jones, Executive Director of CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates, of Kosciusko County who explained what a CASA is and who they are designed to help - the abused and neglected children who are in the court system because they’ve been removed from their home. Things might be going on that are not coming out in court having to do with school, other family, emotional or health needs, etc., and the CASA meets with the child and the child’s teachers and other support staff to make recommendations to the court and inform the court about what the child needs. CASA’s are from all walks of life and can be as young as 21 years old and they are trained and supported throughout their tenure. Ms. Rowland-Jones said listening and being consistent are the two most important aspects of being a CASA. She talked about how she came to her current position and was inspired to leave her work as a lawyer and work for CASA by asking herself, “If I passed away tomorrow would I be satisfied that I have given all I can to my community.” She also talked about a father/daughter CASA team, what the CASAs say about their experiences, the rising number of children in the court system, and the need for more CASA volunteers.
