Ron Turner talks with Dr. Shellie Solomon, President of Children of Inmates. Solomon discusses the impact an incarcerated parent has on a child’s well-being and future. Solomon talks about how the child tends to take the blame for their parents’ absence, often leading to mental illness and anti-social behaviors. Solomon explains how younger children who may have been born to an incarcerated inmate and removed at birth, will most likely have developmental delays because of this attachment disorder. Solomon talks about the various programs they offer to help educate children and adults alike by providing visitations and bonding opportunities for parent and child. Solomon also help empower the incarcerated parent with parenting training and educational resources to help them understand their child’s needs.
