LOCAL Closer Look: Harvest For The Hungry - Ironton, OH

Hot Topx

Sarah Shaver interviewed Diane Porter, Director of Harvest for the Hungry Food Pantry in Ironton. Ms. Porter talked about food insecurity, food deserts, and what both of those look like in Ironton and Lawrence County, which is a very large county with a lack of transportation. She said one in five children is food insecure in the county and almost as many adults, with many other folks barely over.  Harvest for the Hungry is a ministry of three original couples and several different churches who saw a need and those they help are very grateful. She talked about the process for them receive and distribute food and the fact that many seniors who are already living on a small amount of money, are now raising grandchildren or other kinship children due to the opioid/heroin crisis. Ms. Porter also said it’s important to remember that food insecurity and hunger can happen to anyone and especially to our neighbors, children we come in contact with, and senior friends.
