Sarah Shaver talks with Katharyn Sweet, Extension Educator with 4-H Youth Development in Hendricks County, Indiana about today’s 4-H program and how it readies 1st through 12th grade students for a career, further education, and life. Ms. Sweet outlined the clubs, programming, and importance of adult leaders, sparking interest through special projects, how students can join, and the importance of learning leadership and time management skills. Sweet said former 4-H’ers tell her the life-long friendships they’ve gained are a wonderful added part of the program and she added that 4-H gives kids a safe space to try new things, fail, and then try again or try something different with no judgment. She noted that 4-H began with “corn and tomato clubs” for kids to try out new growing techniques and get their parents to try the same techniques on their family farms. kasweet@perdue.edu
