Sarah Shaver talks with Melanie O’Neil, Executive Director of Mental Health America of Jackson County (Indiana). O’Neil outlined the mission and vision of the non-profit, which has been in Seymour since the early 1950’s. O’Neil then addressed the stigma and discomfort surrounding conversations about mental health and treatments and how they can hinder a person from seeking treatment, then pointed to the need for mental health education for the community and the genesis of a county crisis intervention team. She also praised a pre-school mental health program called “I’m Thumbody Special,” their teen Hope Squad, and other tools MHAJC has for residents.
