Senator Steve Daines previously worked in the private sector for 28 years, including 13 years at Procter & Gamble. His roles included six years in Hong Kong and China, where he worked on establishing manufacturing operations and introducing U.S. brands to the Chinese market. This international business experience now informs his work on Senate committees, particularly in foreign relations where he has made multiple trips to China as a senator. Daines later moved from corporate roles into public office.
As a lifelong outdoorsman who grew up in Montana, he developed a deep passion for the outdoors through fly fishing, hunting, backpacking, and skiing. He even proposed to his wife on a 10,200-foot mountain peak after a 15-mile day hike.
