Alicia Criswell, 4-H Extension Educator for Wayne and Franklin Counties in Indiana, spoke with Sarah Shaver about 4-H, including its beginnings as “corn clubs” aimed at youth on early 20th century farms and the meaning behind the 4H symbol and pledge in character development. Criswell lauded the organization’s adult volunteers, her “army,” described 4-H positive youth development, and said the 4-H project is the vehicle toward the end result of what the youth is learning and also the life skills being developed while working on and exhibiting the project. Criswell described the process to join 4-H and peruse projects and shared that all projects are open to differently abled students as well. Criswell said she loves working with teens as they create “the best chaos” in the 4-H Extension atmosphere.
