Kindra Ponzio talks with Tyler Smay, Program Dir, CASA of Laurel Highlands. Smay talks about the role of the volunteer advocate that becomes the voice of the child in foster care, to the courts. He says the advocate spends time with the child, counselors, teachers, social workers, parents, etc to be able to make an informed decision in court as to the best interest of the child. Smay also talks about the extensive training they have for the advocates so they are well prepared. He shares that some of these relationships last far beyond the time the kids are in the foster care system.
