LOCAL Closer Look: Cultivate Food Rescue - Plymouth-South Bend, IN

Posted on Sunday, January 23, 2022 by Sarah Shaver

Sarah Shaver talked with Chris Germann, Associate Director of Planning and Marketing, and Jim Conklin, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Cultivate Food Rescue. Cultivate serves Marshall, Elkhart, and St. Joseph counties in Indiana by both "rescuing" food from universities, catering companies, grocery stores, etc., that would go into a landfill and then packaging and delivering it to children and adults dealing with food insecurity. Mr. Conklin described the food rescue process, how they work with elementary schools, and how he and a chef friend founded Cultivate. Ms, Germann said they then use that food to prepare 5,000 to 6,000 meals per week for their backpack program, redistribute bulk foods to food banks and pantries, and their culinary training program. Mr. Conklin said every day at Cultivate is like the TV show "Chopped" and how the meals are created.
