Ron Turner talks to Jonathan Horton, Sheriff at the Etowah County Sheriff’s Department about how law enforcement and active community involvement contribute to our safety and well-being. Horton discusses the basic steps that citizens can take to help ensure their own safety as well as the community. Horton explains how the biggest issue is drug use which leads to most crimes and how it has changed over the last 25 years changing the drug of choice to more fatal versions. Horton talks about their Prescription Take Back program available to deposit unused narcotics at the sheriff’s office. Horton describes a new program at their facility called “The Impact Center” that helps inmates populate back into society that is seeing good success by offering job training, basic skills and responsibilities that may have not been modeled in their past. Horton enjoys reaching out to the community with educational programs to middle school through high school children. Horton also describes their SLA program which is their Student leadership Academy, a 1 week course for High School Juniors interested in a law enforcement career.
