Sarah Shaver spoke with Jackson County GAL/CASA Director Deena Personett. Ms. Personett explained what a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) and GAL (Guardian Ad Litem) are, how they work as advocates for children in the judicial system who have been removed from their homes, and how they are appointed by a judge. She said 80 to 90% of their children come from homes where there is substance abuse and there has been an increase in severity of the cases in the last three years. The CASA is another set of eyes and ears for the judge and kids that have CASAs are in the system for less time and have a better chance of getting a permanent home or being adopted.
