Sarah Shaver spoke with Jason D. Lee, President and C.E.O. of Junior Achievement (J.A.) of Southeastern Michigan, headquartered in Detroit and serving children from pre-school to high school in a 10 county region. Lee said J.A. was created over 100 years ago to help create the next generation of business people and entrepreneurs and they still use the “JA Company Program,” one of the original components, to this day. He said their mission is to inspire and prepare the next generation for success in the global economy using programming aimed at financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and career exposure that is presented in largely in schools by volunteers from the business community. Lee said young people, especially those from underrepresented communities, often only see careers or education through the lens of their communities so JA brings in outside information to help broaden their scope of possibility. Lee also related several stories of how JA helped young people.
