Monika Kelly spoke to Kathilynn Carpenter, the Executive Director of Sunrise Marketplace, which operates a BID (Business Improvement District) which maintains an office in Sunrise Mall. Decisions are made by the Board of Directors, Committees and executed by staff members. Ms. Carpenter shared that the SMP has helped businesses navigate through COVID with masks, PPE, signage, tents and even fencing. They've given out $10,000 worth of gift cards to incentivize the public to use the various businesses during the pandemic. In the past, the Sunrise Marketplace has put on concerts, events and has sought to bring culture to Citrus Heights with things such as the Masterpieces in the Marketplace, where they wrapped transformers with works of art. The Sunrise Marketplace's goal is to improve the economy and invite new and existing customers into the area. Ms. Carpenter also talked about sales tax and it's impact on the local district's economy and how important it is for residents to shop at brick-and-mortar stores and businesses.
