Sarah Shaver spoke with the director of The Humane Society of the Ohio Valley, Scott Hatfield. He talked about the Society’s mission to care for abandoned animals and treat them humanely, to get them into a better situation and, hopefully, permanent homes. The society has been there since the late 1800’s and they have a very active group. Mr. Hatfield discussed the problem with adoption for pit mix dogs, their work with the county Dog Warden to help abused pets, their foster program, and adoption. Stray and abandoned animals, especially cats, are a problem in the county and they are trying to address it with education, and he talked about spay and neuter as well as responsible pet ownership, as well as benefits to having a pet in your home. He also addressed the Society’s biggest challenges and how to volunteer.
