LOCAL Closer Look: Westport South Beach Historical Society (Westport, Washington)

Posted on Sunday, July 11, 2021 by Jeanice Lee

Jeanice Lee talks with the Executive Director of the Westport South Beach Historical Society, John Shaw. The Westport South Beach Historical Society was formed in 1984 and is known for it's salmon and Coast Guard history. John talks about what time was like back in the 1980s and even back into the 1970s in the Westport area. At that time the purpose was to convert the former US Coast Guard Station into a museum. The original building served as headquarters for the local Coast Guard until they outgrew it. We learn about McCausland Hall (Bob and Ruth McCausland), the history on the Westport Jetty and John briefly shares about the Greys Harbor Lighthouse, and the Maritime Museum. We learn about places of interest in Westport. Westport is known for it's great beaches, yacht building, seafood processing, and is becoming more of a tourist destination.
