Peace in the Chaos: Managing Social Anxiety Disorder

Anxiety

Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. – Ecclesiastes 4:9-10a NLT

What Is Social Anxiety Disorder?

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a mental health condition characterized by a prolonged, severe fear of being watched, judged, or humiliated by others in a social setting. Unlike ordinary shyness, this form of anxiety creates distress that interferes with other areas of life such as work, school, relationships, or regular daily routines.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, “To be diagnosed with social anxiety disorder, a person must have strong fear or anxiety about social situations where they might be judged or scrutinized by others.

They may try to avoid these situations or face them with extreme discomfort. These feelings must last at least 6 months and interfere with daily life, such as work, school, or relationships” (NIHM, revised 2025).

Getting Treatment for Social Anxiety Disorder

Education is the best first step to conquering your social anxiety or helping a loved one through their battle with it. Research early signs and symptoms, unpack your various options for next steps, and stay up to date on developments for treatment.

If you feel like your social anxiety isn’t able to be managed independently, it may be time to contact a healthcare professional who is trained in identifying and treating mental health disorders. They will be able to note the severity of your social anxiety and determine the best path forward for you.

There are a variety of reasons you may be experiencing social anxiety, meaning individual treatment and care will look different for everyone. Understanding what the root cause is will help you address the symptoms of SAD as you work toward holistic health and maintenance.

If you’ve never experienced the need to receive medical treatment for mental health reasons, it may be daunting to initiate the process. Talk to others who have done it before and read other people’s experiences online. Faith and science go hand in hand, for they both flow from God’s magnificent design (Colossians 1:16).

Embracing Community & Faith

It can be difficult to enter into social situations while you’re working on overcoming social anxiety disorder. But finding ways to connect with other trusted believers and close family or friends on a regular basis can help you take positive steps forward.

Don’t rush it—if the idea of a Sunday service feels intimidating, consider joining a small group so you can watch the sermon online and follow up with an in-person gathering to talk through what you learned (but more importantly, to practice socializing in a safe environment).

As you become more confident in spending time in a small group setting, work your way up to larger gatherings—like a midweek service, or a men’s or women’s group—as you gradually progress toward general social interactions (such as going to the grocery store, visiting a local park, or attending the main service at your church).

Trust in God and the Process

Whatever situations give you social anxiety, there are steps to help overcome them as well as people who want to help you implement them. Have faith that God will use them to give you a new understanding of the disorder, and believe with all of your heart that He can and will transform, regenerate, and renew you through the supernatural power of the Spirit (Titus 3:5).

You may not see immediate change overnight, and some days will likely be harder than others. But don’t give up. The God of the universe is by your side, walking every step of this journey with you—through every high and low (Matthew 28:20). You were made to be in community, and God wants you to enjoy that part of your innate wiring and innermost makings (Genesis 2:18).

Take a slow breath in…and let it out. Believe that God is going to protect you in every moment of this beautiful life He has blessed you with.
