8 Prayers for Preparing for Marriage

Preparing for marriage can be an exciting and transformative journey in life, marked by much joy and potentially many challenges as well. As Christians, we hold to the profound desire to commence this sacred union with Jesus Christ at the very core. Placing our future marriage under the loving guidance of the Lord through prayer is not only a heartfelt commitment but also a powerful shield that God uses to protect us as He helps us toward a thriving partnership. Through the Scriptures below, you will discover a collection of eight heartfelt prayers which are designed to infuse your journey with Biblical wisdom and spiritual direction, serving as a compass as you and your partner surrender your future lives to God.

1. For everything comes from Him and exists by His power and is intended for His glory. All glory to Him forever! Amen. – Romans 11:36 NLT

Lord, thank You for my fiancé. Since You are the Source of all good things, I am certain You brought us together. I’m asking You to remain at the center of our relationship, that it be based on You and anchored in You. Because I know this marriage is ultimately for Your glory, Jesus, let Your name shine through it. Amen.

2. Commit your actions to the LORD, and your plans will succeed. – Proverbs 16:3 NLT

Lord, I give You this marriage we are about to embark on. Give us an unshakeable bond with one another. We commit to You our intentions to form a strong family, remain faithful to one another over time, and grow old together. We trust You as the core and wellspring of our marriage. We trust You to help us succeed. In Your name, amen.

3. And further, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. – Ephesians 5:21 NLT

God, please teach us to honor You in our future marriage by respectfully blessing and supporting one another. Show us what healthy mutual honor looks like, taking the time to listen to and consider one another. I’m praying You will bless our marriage, working for us to develop love and intimacy with each other. May we be grateful for the gift that is our marriage. In Jesus’ name, amen.

4. But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness. – Galatians 5:22 NLT

Lord, I pray You move in both of us to bring about this fruit in our lives. Let this spiritual fruit be the basis by which we engage with one another. We desire You to work deep inside us so that true, self-giving love is worked out with tremendous patience and kindness. Create in us what we lack in ourselves apart from You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

5. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. – 1 Corinthians 13:5 NLT

Because Your Word states, “God is love,” we know You are the wellspring of true love. We ask You to show up in our marriage and help us to maintain and stay in genuine love for each other. Keep us out of the negative mindset that causes us to stray after our own way of doing things. Please help us avoid becoming irritated or keeping track of each other’s wrongs as we become more intimate in knowing one another. In Jesus’ name, amen.

6. Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a reward from Him. – Psalm 127:3 NLT

Father, we thank You ahead of time for the free gift of family that You are giving to us. Give us Your perspective on children, so one day we’ll be godly parents who follow in the ways of Jesus. With the knowledge of Your Word, help us to establish our family and parenting on the foundation of Your Son, and prepare us today for our future family. In Jesus’ name, amen.

7. If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and He will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. – James 1:5 NLT

Father, You are the generous God who wants to lead us in Your ways. As we dedicate our future marriage to You, we ask that Your wisdom be actively revealed to us. Give us ears to hear what You are saying, guide us through the difficult seasons, and guard us from getting off course. We submit all future choices to You. In Jesus’ name mighty name, amen.

8. Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. 10 If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. 11 Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? – Ecclesiastes 4:9–11 NLT

God, Your Word says, “Two are better than one”, and we “can help each other succeed.” I pray this is how our marriage will be, that we will build each other up. I pray we will bring out the best in each other and see one another become all You have designed us to be. Put Your hand on this marriage Lord, keep us from trouble. I pray all these things in Jesus’ mighty name, amen.
