Prayers for an Identity Crisis

Identity

There are times in our lives when we can be tempted to doubt our identity in Christ. Maybe these thoughts come up due to temptations, changes in our stage of life, or when we begin wondering if certain lies are true. When we wrestle with this, our greatest asset is the truth of Scripture and prayer. Here are a few prayers to begin with if you’re in the middle of this kind of season.

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. – Ephesians 2:10 ESV

God, I’m grateful that Ephesians 2 tells me I am Your workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works that You prepared for me beforehand. I’m grateful for the unique plans and purpose that You have for my life that are different from anyone else.  It feels difficult to remember that right now, so I’m asking You to remind me of it. Please help me to see that You have created me with intentionality. Continue to remind me of this through any moments of comparison. I know that You have good plans for me. Amen.

So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when He adopted you as His own children. Now we call Him, “Abba, Father.” For His Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children. – Romans 8:15-16 NLT

Heavenly Father, I’m asking for You to remind me of my identity as Your child. No matter what job I have or how seasons of life may change, that truth never will. Thank You for bringing me into Your family and that my spirit bears witness to the fact that I am Your child, just like I have read in Romans 8. When the things I’m known for change, remind me that my standing as Your child never does. Thank You, Father, that I am Your child no matter what things around me may look like. Amen.

Make them holy by Your truth; teach them Your Word, which is truth. – John 17:17 NLT

Lord, I’m tempted to believe lies about who I am. When I hear these lies, remove them and replace them with the truth of Your Word. Thank You for the reminder that Jesus Himself speaks in John 17 that Your Word is truth. Lord, please sanctify me in Your truth. Whatever these lies may be, I ask that You expose them through Your Holy Spirit and replace them with the truth. Please remind me that I can rest in what You have said—that I am cared for, accepted because of Jesus, and set free from my past as a new creation in Christ. Amen.

Your unfailing love is better than life itself; how I praise you! – Psalm 63:3 NLT

Heavenly Father, I know that You say that I am loved by You so much that You would make a way for me to have a relationship with You. I believe that You have loved me with an everlasting love, like I read in Scripture. I believe that I am cared for by You and that You see me in every moment. Thank You for the words of Psalm 63, that Your everlasting love is better than life. No matter what is going on around me, I know that I can rest in Your great love for me, not because of what I have done, but because of Jesus Christ. Amen.

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. – Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV

God, please remind me that my identity is fixed in Christ. It can be so easy right now to believe that I need to do more to be accepted. Thank You for the reminder of what Paul writes in Ephesians, that I have been saved by grace through faith, not as a result of anything I have done. Remind me of that when I’m tempted to believe that I need to work to gain purpose, identity, or love from You. God, please settle in my heart that all these truths of my identity are fixed and unwavering because of the Gospel. Amen.
