The Greatest Advisor

Read the transcript from today's video devotional.

I know for each one of us in different seasons of life, it's always helpful to have an advisor when we’re left to our own devices to figure things out. That might be a little bit complicated or unfamiliar to you. It can be overwhelming, and it can induce anxiety.

The Value of an Advisor

I know for me, whenever tax season comes around, I need an advisor because anyone who knows me knows I am not administratively strong. That's not my gift set. I welcome somebody who has expertise in the area stepping in and offering guidance. What's funny is, as silly as that example can be, there is a rest and a trust that I put in that advisor, because if they know what they're talking about, it allows me to take a deep breath and allow them to guide me forward, to help me to see what I need to do, where I need to go, and how to fulfill the steps necessary to accomplish the goal.

God, Our Perfect Guide

Well, here is the greatest advisor available to humanity, telling us that it's possible to find rest and trust in His advisement. The Lord says, "I will guide you along the best pathway." To know that God, the God of the universe, the God who created us, knows us at every single level, and also knows what is best for us. He is the one who tells us where to go and how to get there.

Taking Advantage of God's Guidance

What's interesting is, though, that probably feels like an obvious statement to the people who have committed to follow the way of Jesus and have given their lives to God. It's interesting that we still don't take advantage of this advisement. It's almost like somebody having GPS turned on in their car, and they don't know where they're going, and they are directionally challenged, sort of like I am. They decide, even though I have somewhere I'm trying to go, and even though I don't know where I'm going, there is this GPS that will tell me where to go if I listen to it.

It's on in the background and the voice is saying, "Turn right, turn left, go straight." Yet, even though I don't know where I'm going, and I don't know how to get there myself, I decide it's best for me to ignore the advice of the GPS. That would be ridiculous. You would be in the passenger seat thinking, why in the world won't this guy just listen to the advisement of the one who knows where they're going?

Trusting God's Direction

Even as I'm saying this right now, I feel the conviction of how often that's true about me with God. What's crazy is He gives us the opportunity to pray and to listen to His voice and to meditate and to focus on what He might be saying. But He also gives us His Word. There's a GPS right here. So often when I'm confused, I'm lost, or I don't know where to go and I need to know the path, I don't even turn to the road map that's right in front of me. Maybe today, this is a reminder for us to remember that we have an advisor. We have One who is an expert in the area of how to live in this world. Maybe today we're reminded to trust His advice.
