When Fear Replaces Wonder

Read the transcript from today's video devotional.

King Herod was deeply disturbed when he heard this news. The same night that brought Mary wonder and the wise men joy brought King Herod something entirely different. Scripture tells us in Matthew chapter 2, verse 16 that Herod was furious when he realized that the wise men had outwitted him. He sent soldiers to kill all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under.

A Heart Ruled by Pride and Fear

King Herod saw the arrival of the Messiah not as salvation, but as a direct threat to everything he controlled. When the wise men came seeking the King of the Jews, Herod's deep insecurity transformed into paralyzing fear, and that fear escalated into devastating violence. This act of terror was driven by one man's desperate attempt to preserve his crumbling sense of power. Herod's actions reveal the profound danger of a heart ruled by pride and fear.

Do you feel like your sense of power and control is slipping away? Perhaps it's a career you spent years developing, the relationships you've cultivated, your reputation in your community, or financial security you've worked so hard to achieve. Like Herod, we can become so invested in protecting areas of our own lives that we lose sight of what truly matters.

When Fear Shows Up

Fear may show up when we feel threatened by a colleague's advancement, when we hold back from loving fully because someone might disappoint us, when we hoard our resources because we're afraid there won't be enough, or when we resist change, even when it might lead to something better. The tragedy is our attempts to secure our own kingdoms through our fear-based actions often destroy the very things that we're trying to protect.

We have the ability to choose differently than Herod. When fear begins to influence our hearts, we can recognize it as a false counselor that promises security but usually delivers destruction. Instead, we can trust in God's abundant provision, knowing that there is enough room in His kingdom for everyone to flourish. We can embrace the unknown, understanding that change isn't always loss, but it's sometimes the pathway to something far better than we could ever imagine.

God Is Always Working

God is always working, even in the darkest moments. The enemy may rage, but God preserves. The world may resist His plans, but God redeems every situation. The birth of Jesus was not merely the arrival of another child. It was the establishment of a kingdom that cannot be shaken by any earthly power.

Today, God is inviting us to lay down our fear and pride, trusting that His kingdom is infinitely better than anything we could build or protect ourselves. Let's be reminded that we are citizens of another kingdom, and our security is found in the unshakable King, Jesus Christ.
