Your Rock of Remembrance

Read the transcript from today's video devotional.

If you're anything like me, I can get lost in my own thoughts. You start down one road, you get distracted and you go to another, and then you get distracted again. It gets to the point where you can't even finish a sentence. I get lost in my own thoughts, but this Scripture holds a good key if you get into what I call a spiral of regret.

When you're thinking about all your things, take a moment and stop to ponder what God has done. We have so many examples in Scripture of what we can focus on when our worlds are spinning. But there's an example I'm thinking of specifically that might prove to be a practical, tangible tool for you as you're maneuvering through the spiral of regret.

Israel's Memorial Stones

God had the people of Israel cross the Jordan, and on the other side of it he had them collect some rocks. They built a pillar as a way to remember what God had done for them. This is a rock I actually keep on my desk as a reminder. It's not a pillar by any means. It's practically a pebble.

When I look at this, this is a reminder to me of new beginnings and how God is building something new in my life. When I'm distracted by all the things I don't understand or see, I can come back to this rock and remember God is doing a work that only He can do, and He's going to be the one to finish it.

Finding Your Rock

What is your rock of remembrance? What's something that you have to come back to and remind yourself of to break you out of that spiral? I'd encourage you as you're sitting and thinking about that, reading the Word, find something tangible you can keep with you. Maybe it's a post-it note on your monitor at your desk, or it could actually be a rock. Something you can look at and say, I see this rock and remember, God's been there for me. He's not letting me down. He's a sure foundation. He's going to carry me through.

What is your rock of remembrance? When you find yourself getting lost in your own thoughts, call yourself back to the Word of God. Reminding yourself that He is good. His word never changes, and when He makes a promise, He'll keep it.
