Today's Verse of the Day is one that's very poignant and powerful, and it speaks to all of us who've ever been in a situation of chaos. We all live in the same world, so we’ve all been in this place.
It comes from Isaiah chapter 26, verse 4. It says, "Trust in the LORD always, for the LORD GOD is the eternal Rock."
The Context: A Shaking World
I know on the surface this one sounds very simple, maybe even repetitive, something you've heard before, but there's really a lot happening here that we can all take to help us become better in our day-to-day lives.
When Isaiah was writing this, it sits in a passage where he was just sharing an apocalyptic vision where the world literally shook. When you think about the world shaking, he's telling the people where our focus should lie when the world feels like it's shaking.
When Your World Is Shaking
Have you ever found yourself in a situation, in your own life, where it felt like your world was shaking? Maybe it's a relationship. Maybe it's your children. Maybe it's your parents, your siblings. Maybe it's a career. Maybe it feels like things—the walls around you—are shaking and you feel uncomfortable, and you're not exactly sure what the future looks like.
What is this? Precisely why Isaiah wrote this. This is how we should respond.
First Word: Trust
The first word he says is "trust." Trust in the Lord.
I know the hardest thing for us to do as believers is to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus when chaos is happening around us. That's why He's reminding us where our focus should lie.
What Trust Really Means
Trust really means to lean your full weight into something. Now there's a lot of things we can put our weight into. Our first response, sometimes, is friends. Sometimes it's finances, sometimes it's family.
But really, we should lean our full weight into God because all of those things can come and go. Do you know what remains the same forever? God.
God Is the Eternal Rock
How do we know? Because this text tells us He is the eternal rock.
If you look into the history of these words, the word "rock" is not talking about a good luck charm you carry in your pocket. Not that kind of rock. It's talking about an immovable, large-faced stone.
Rather than carrying God with us like He's a good luck charm, what God actually is: He is a shelter and a refuge, a mountain of safety for us to hide ourselves in.
The Word Always
If you feel like your world is shaken, you must lean into God.
One of the most difficult parts of this verse, which you might think I haven't seen this part yet, is the word "always."
Many of us as believers, we don't have a problem trusting God. We know to trust God. It's that word "always" that's important because that means whether I'm up, whether I'm down, whether it feels like life is all around—I'm leaning in. I am putting my full trust in God, the immovable stone. I'm hiding in Him.
Peace Be Still
When my world feels like it's shaking, He can whisper, peace, be still, and everything comes together.
Lean into Him. Trust in God, for He is your rock, and everything will all work out in the end according to His pleasing and perfect plan for your life.
