Overcoming Anxiety and Worry

"Don't worry about anything; instead. Pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done." Philippians 4:6 (NLT)

"Give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares for you." I Peter 5:7 (NLT)

25 "That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? 27 Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?" Matthew 6:25-27 (NLT)

Anxiety. Worry. Fear. I have had my share of mental torment and my heart goes out to you. The encouraging news is there is a WAY OUT. When I was experiencing fear and worry, I felt like I was in a mental prison. Here are some principles that have set me free from the chains of worry and can set you free too. They come in the acronym W.O.R.R.Y.

Worry is unnecessary because God will meet all your needs. Worry is like rocking in chair. You do a lot of work but go nowhere. When we realize worry is unnecessary because God is bigger than any problem have. We will be able to rest in His loving care for us and realize how unnecessary worry is.

Offer your mind to God in worship. Worship is the opposite of worry. God wants us to be free of the cares of the world so we can worship Him. Take time to praise God for the fact that whatever you are going through, He is bigger than your worries. He is in it. He will help you. God is the God of today and tomorrow.

Remember to look at the birds. There are about 10.000 species of birds … and God feeds every one of them! God desires for you to look at the birds. Birds take meticulous care to find food …everywhere. As God feeds the birds, He will take much more care of you.

Realize you are precious to God. God wants you to know you are far more precious than birds. You can call him your Heavenly Father because you are precious to your Father. Remember how valuable you are to Him.

Yield yourself to small steps of growth. Worry can easily take on a life of its own. Since worry can produce more worry, the above steps help you take small strides to defeat anxiety. Then, we eliminate other things associated with worry. Let’s celebrate small stages of growth. NO one is immune to worry. Everyone is tempted with anxiety. But we will climb out of the web of anxiety with small steps in our mindset along the way. Yield to God and watch God conquer your worries.

Digging Deeper:

  1. Don't start worrying (Matthew 6:25).
  2. Cast all your worries upon God (I Peter 5:7).
  3. Read Psalm 139:1-6 and record how intimately God watches over your life.
