Our moms do so much for us! One of the best ways we can honor them for who they are and thank them for all they’ve done is to lift them up to the Lord in prayer.
Here are 8 Scripture-based prayers to pray over your mother (and all mothers!) this Mother’s Day.
When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness. – Proverbs 31:26 NLT
Father, we pray for our mothers today, that You would strengthen them according to Your will. Draw them deeper into Your Word and grow them in their faith. May they walk in dignity and in the certainty that comes from a secure relationship with You, Jesus. May they reinforce their families with their bold faithfulness to You, God. Bless them in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Her children stand and bless her. Her husband praises her: “There are many virtuous and capable women in the world, but you surpass them all!” – Proverbs 31:28-29 NLT
Dear God, You know mothers are often busy with things that show faithfulness to You but may go unrecognized by others. Please let them hear thankful praise, not for their own sake, but for Your glory. As You work in them and as their families receive the fruits of their labor in You, we pray they feel fulfilled in their service before You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
She is energetic and strong, a hard worker. She makes sure her dealings are profitable; her lamp burns late into the night. – Proverbs 31:17-18 NLT
Father, may the labor of mothers be a sweet-smelling aroma before You, a sacrifice of praise before Your throne. May they find rest in You. Enable them to see the benefits of Your work in their hearts and in their lives, that they might give You praise and sing of Your goodness. May their hearts overflow with the wealth of joy You provide in motherhood. In Jesus’ name, amen.
I could have no greater joy than to hear that my children are following the truth. – 3 John 1:4 NLT
Father, may the seeds of the Gospel planted by mothers come to bear fruit. May the truth of Your Word sung over their children bring assurance to their hearts as they minister in their homes. May Your Word echo clear from their mouths and into the hearts of their children, a blessing for the years to come. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it. – Proverbs 22:6 NLT
Lord, as parents, we see our children pass through a variety of life situations—some good, some difficult. We pray for mothers who are steadfast in prayer over their children, and we pray You encourage them, strengthening them to the task of prayer, that they may one day rejoice at Your work in the lives of their children. Please guard their hearts against hurt and energize them with Your love. In Jesus’ name, amen.
And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. – Deuteronomy 6:6-7 NLT
Father, we pray for the legacy of mothers who walk in faithfulness. We pray that Your work in their lives may echo to second and third generations, a legacy of faithfulness that blesses Your name. Father, preserve them, with Your faithfulness, for the long role of motherhood. Encourage them in Your joy. Lift their heads from times of worry and sorrow. Let their love echo Yours, and Your truth echo from their lips and through their children. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. – 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NLT
Lord, may Your wisdom be a gift to mothers who bless Your name. May Your work in their lives grace the heads and hearts of their children, impacting them for the years ahead. May their families be blessed by Your good work and their honor as mothers be multiplied, as their children walk in faithfulness. Guard them against the ways of this world and cover them instead with Your peace. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins. – 1 Peter 4:8 NLT
Father, please help mothers to be a blessing to one another. May they raise each other up according to Your Word, seeking to share Your wisdom with those who come after them, building up Your church, and serving as an encouragement. May they speak peace, share love, and give guidance that brings glory to You. In Jesus name, amen.
