As someone who grew up in the church, I always heard about how we're called to be led by the Spirit, or we need to be Spirit filled. I always thought that that call was reserved for pastors, or for the leaders of the church, or those that have some kind of Bible degree. I never felt qualified because I thought it was for the professionals, so to speak.
When I started studying scripture, I found out quick that I can live a life that's led by the Spirit. In fact, it's important for us to understand that when we got saved, when we gave our lives to the Lord, we received the Holy Spirit. We have the Holy Spirit living on the inside of us.
What Does It Mean to Be Led by the Spirit?
That raises the question, what does it mean to be led by the Spirit? I want to answer that question today. One of the roles of the Holy Spirit is that the Holy Spirit convicts us of our sin. If we want to be led by the Spirit, we need to respond to the conviction of the Holy Spirit.
There are days where I miss the mark, and I know I've missed the mark, and the Holy Spirit will remind me that that's not who you are. Come back to the Lord. Repent of your sin. Turn, because grace is available. The Holy Spirit convicts us of our sin.
In Galatians chapter 5, verses 22 through 23, we're told that the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, self-control. If we're going to be led by the Spirit, Paul tells us that we're going to walk in love. We're going to be kind to our neighbors. Now, that doesn't mean that we're going to live this perfect life. No, but we will display those qualities wherever God has placed us. When we do miss the mark, the Holy Spirit once again will convict us.
Filling Our Lives with God's Word
Now, another way that we are led by the Spirit is by filling our lives with God's Word and filling our minds daily. It's a daily decision where I choose to dwell on the things of God. When I fill my mind with the truth of God's Word, I know when the Holy Spirit will speak to me, because the Holy Spirit won't tell me to do something that contradicts the Word of God.
Resting in the Finished Work of the Cross
I want to close with this in Galatians chapter 5 and verse 1, Paul says something interesting. He says, "So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free," and hear this, he says, "don't get tied up again in slavery to the law." He's reminding the Galatians, you started this Christian race with the grace of God. You believed in the Lord, and he's saying, don't go back to legalism, because our tendency as humans is to want to do stuff for God and thinking that our doing is what will please the Lord. He's saying, no, you have to rest in the finished work of the cross. Remember that what Jesus did for us is enough.
If we're going to be led by the Spirit, we have to rest in the finished work of the cross and trust that what Jesus did for us on the cross was enough.
