Finding Freedom in Christ

3 ways to experience freedom this summer text

“So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.” - John 8:36 (NLT)

For the first eight years of marriage, my wife and I struggled with debt. We didn't know how to budget and spent WAY more than we could afford. By the time we decided to do something about the financial elephant in the room (it may have been more of a humpback whale by that point) our total debt burden was in the five figures.

Owing that much money made it hard to enjoy our day-to-day lives. To pay it off, we had to cut back drastically. Finally, we did climb out of the financial hole we had dug for ourselves.

Many Christians I talk to live in a similar way–with the sense that they are living in a pit of some sort. They know God has forgiven them of their sins, but they feel so weighed down by hurt, guilt, worry, and busyness they rarely enjoy the abundant life Jesus came to give us (John 10:10).

As we celebrate our freedom as a nation this 4th of July, let's consider how can we break free from what’s getting in the way of enjoying our freedom in Christ?

In Galatians 5:13, the Apostle Paul offers three suggestions. Here they are:

1. Accept God's invitation to freedom.
Paul begins verse 13 by saying, "For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters." God doesn't want you to live as a slave to sin. You were created to live free. No matter what's happened in your past or what you've done, your Heavenly Father is waiting for you with open arms (Luke 15:11-32).

2. Use your freedom wisely.
The second part of verse 13 says, “But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature.” The freedom we have in Christ isn’t a license to do whatever we want (1 Corinthians 10:23-34). Many of us know people who’ve made careless choices and paid the price. God wants you to make wise decisions by following Him so you can avoid those pitfalls.

3. Find ways to help others.
Paul concludes verse 13 by saying, “Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.” Look for opportunities to serve others. Ask God to show you where and how you can make a contribution with your life. Love others with the same love Christ has revealed to you.
This week, as you remember the sacrifice of those who gave their lives for the freedom we enjoy as a nation, reflect on the sacrifice Jesus made for you on the cross. Thank Him for the incredible gift He has given you and take these steps to experience freedom in Him.

Going Forward

  1. In your life, where are you struggling to enjoy freedom in Christ?
  2. Is there a step, from today’s devotional, that stands out to you? How will you go about growing in that area this week?
