Satisfy us each morning with Your unfailing love, so we may sing for joy to the end of our lives. – Psalm 90:14 NLT
I heard a song lyric recently that said, “Most days are just Wednesdays,” the idea being that most days aren’t especially amazing or especially terrible—they’re just regular, somewhat “boring” days. We take our kids to daycare, we go to work, we go to school. We eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We do a load of laundry. We pick up a friend from the airport. Maybe we go for a walk, play a board game, or go grocery shopping. Of course, there will be extra special days and extra tragic days in between, but most days really are just Wednesdays.
I love that our verse today says, “Satisfy us each morning with your unfailing love.” This tells us that more often than not, by the end of the day, after we’ve worked hard and attended to all of our responsibilities and taken care of our families and just worn ourselves clean out, we’ll most likely have forgotten that our satisfaction and rest are found in Jesus alone. The saving work He did on the cross for us was completed once for all time—but we need the refreshing gift of His love and mercy every single day. We need to start each morning asking Him to be enough to get us through that day.
The gospels make a point of showing how regularly Jesus withdrew—often in the morning while it was still dark—from His disciples and the crowds that followed Him everywhere to spend time in prayer (Mark 1:35; Matthew 14:23; Luke 5:16; Mark 6:46). He knew the importance of beginning each morning in the presence of God, seeking His Father’s strength, wisdom, and guidance for the day ahead.
Even if your day today looks the exact same as the hundred—or even the thousand—that have come before it, welcome God into it. Maybe that seems silly, maybe you think your day is too small or insignificant for God to care about. Sometimes I have to remind myself that God never gets bored! He delights in spending time with His children, no matter what that looks like. So invite Him to be present in all your laundry-folding, your-meal cooking, your car-washing, your email-answering. Seek His wisdom first when you need to make a decision. Rely on His strength to get you through tough days.
When we invite God into the repetitive, slow, seemingly uninteresting moments that make up our lives, we discover just how much beauty and grace can be found in them. And if we let them, the moments when we’re faithful to what God has put in front of us are the moments that can become the holiest.
This morning, as you begin your day, ask that His love and His joy would be sufficient to carry you from moment to moment.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You so much for this day. It may not be exciting or feel special in any way, but I know that it’s still a gift from You. Thank You for the breath in my lungs. Thank You for Your presence with me as I go about the work You’ve given me to do. Help me to remember You, to be grateful for small moments of grace, and to reflect Your love to all those around me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
