Talking with God

Learning to Talk with God through Prayer

1. What Is Prayer?

Prayer is simply talking with God. It's how we connect with Him, share our hearts, seek His guidance, and listen for His voice. Prayer helps us grow closer to God and reminds us we’re not alone.

2. Why Should We Pray?

• To know God more personally

• To understand God’s will for our lives

• To find peace in hard times

• To ask for help and guidance

• To thank Him for His goodness

• To bring others before Him

Prayer isn’t about changing God’s mind; it’s about changing our hearts.

3. How Do I Start?

Use the P.R.A.Y. guide:

  • Praise – Tell God how great He is. Thank Him for His love and kindness.
  • Repent – Admit where you’ve messed up. Ask for His forgiveness and strength to turn from sin.
  • Ask – Share your needs, questions, and hopes. Ask on behalf of others too (see: intercession).
  • Yield – Be still. Listen. Trust God to work things out in His perfect time and way.

4. What Should I Say?

Jesus teaches the disciples how to pray in Matthew 6:9-13. In His example, Jesus reminds us to pray with reverence and respect for God. We should thank Him for providing, ask Him to move our hearts, and pray for His will to be done.

There’s no script to follow, but here’s an example of what this might look like:

“God, You are amazing. Thank You for loving me. I know I mess up, and I’m sorry. Please help me trust You today. I need Your peace and strength. Teach me to follow You. Amen.”

Talking to God is personal – try to follow Jesus’ outline using your own words. The more you pray, the more natural it will become.

5. When and Where Should I Pray?

Anytime. Anywhere. God is always listening.

  • In the morning or before bed
  • In the car, on a walk, or during a quiet moment
  • With others or on your own

“Never stop praying.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17

6. How Can I Grow in Prayer?

  • Keep a prayer journal to write out your prayers or what God is showing you
  • Pray Scripture like the Psalms, carefully thinking about their meaning
  • Use short, repeatable prayers throughout your day (e.g., “Jesus, I trust You.”)
  • Pray with others in a small group, at church, or with a friend

6. What Now?

Prayer is an important piece to growing in your relationship with God. But that's not the only relationship you were made for. Learn about the value of a community faith that will help you grow as a believer.
