21 Questions Christmas Edition with Mac Powell

Mac Powell was born to love Christmas…literally! (His birthday’s December 25!) This year, the former Third Day frontman will celebrate the season on the 2021 K-LOVE Christmas Tour with his friends Casting Crowns, CAIN, Dante Bowe, Jordan St. Cyr, and The Skit Guys, where he’s sure to perform his brand new original song, “Jesus Christ Is Born.” The holiday outing will cap a phenomenal year for Powell, who toured with Zach Williams and Steven Curtis Chapman and released his first solo Christian album, New Creation.

The “River of Life” singer recently joined KLOVE.com for a Christmas edition of “21 Questions” where he revealed a deep appreciation for Ralphie Parker, his dream holiday duet (spoiler alert: It involves a county legend!), and why Waffle House has become a part of the annual Powell family Christmas tradition.

KLOVE.com: Favorite Christmas memory of all time?

Mac Powell: It’s really a recurring Christmas memory. My birthday is Christmas Day, so my family and I celebrate Christmas and my birthday with dinner at Waffle House on Christmas night every year!

KLOVE.com: Best Christmas gift you’ve ever received?

Mac Powell: An official Red Ryder, carbine action, 200-shot, range model air rifle with a compass in the stock and a thing that tells time.

KLOVE.com: One reason you’re excited to be a part of this year’s K-LOVE Christmas Tour?

Mac Powell: I absolutely love musical collaborations. With so many great artists, I’m excited about those possibilities!

KLOVE.com: Christmas song you wish you’d written?

Mac Powell: “Jingle Bells.” Can you imagine the songwriting royalties on a song like that?!

KLOVE.com: One Christmas movie you watch every single year?

Mac Powell: Definitely A Christmas Story. And Elf is slowly catching up to that status.

KLOVE.com: Favorite Christmas food?

Mac Powell: My mama’s turkey and dressing.

KLOVE.com: Christmas tradition you wish you had carried into adulthood?

Mac Powell: When I was a kid, we used to go to my grandfather’s house every Christmas Eve. That’s what Christmas was all about for me. I miss being able to go there and spend time with all our family.

KLOVE.com: Most meaningful ornament on your tree?

Mac Powell: We have a butterfly ornament that we always hide somewhere on the tree, and the children try to find it.

KLOVE.com: Family recipe or treat that’s only made during the holidays?

Mac Powell: We have a friend that brings us these special candy-coated pecans. They are SO GOOD!

KLOVE.com: Strangest place you’ve ever spent Christmas?

Mac Powell: The hospital. Day I was born.

KLOVE.com:  Finish this sentence. It’s not Christmas until…

Mac Powell: We’ve had my wife’s side of the family over for Christmas Eve dinner.

KLOVE.com: All-time favorite Christmas song?

Mac Powell: “Joy to the World.” I’m not sure why, I just love singing this one!

KLOVE.com:  Artist you’re most excited to get to know on the K-LOVE Christmas Tour (and why)?

Mac Powell: Dante Bowe! I’m blown away by his voice and his songwriting.

KLOVE.com: If you can’t be home for the holidays, the only place you’d rather be?

Mac Powell: Maybe in a cool cabin somewhere in Wyoming while it’s snowing outside. But my family definitely needs to be there!

KLOVE.com: Favorite passage of Scripture from the Christmas story?

Mac Powell: Luke 2:13: “Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.’”

KLOVE.com:  Christmas music before or after Thanksgiving?

Mac Powell: After. I feel sorry for Thanksgiving. It's turned into "pre-Christmas."

KLOVE.com: Funniest family Christmas story/memory?

Mac Powell: One Christmas Eve, when we had my wife’s family over for dinner, we made it “A Christmas Story” Christmas. Everyone wore ugly Christmas sweaters, we had Chinese for dinner, and Aimee [my wife] ordered a leg lamp to put in the window. “It’s a major award!”

KLOVE.com:  Artist you’d most love to record a Christmas duet with?

Mac Powell: Willie Nelson!

KLOVE.com: Christmas record you have on repeat all December?

Mac Powell: Several Harry Connick, Jr., albums.

KLOVE.com:  White lights or colored lights?

Mac Powell: That's a tough one. White lights are just classic.

KLOVE.com:  What Christmas means to you?

Mac Powell: It’s very special to me. Getting to celebrate the birth of Jesus and my birthday is kind of cool. No doubt there are some negatives to it. When your birthday is on Christmas, you usually get half the number of gifts. But the trade-off is I get to have all our family together in a wonderful time of celebration!
