LOCAL Closer Look: Youth Emergency Services – Ralston

Hot Topx

Ron Turner talks with Kalisha Reed, Executive Director of Youth Emergency Services (YES), serving the Omaha–Douglas County area, providing housing and crisis support to youth and young adults experiencing homelessness and instability. Reed discusses YES programs, including street outreach, a drop-in center, emergency shelter, transitional and independent living, maternity housing, and case management. Reed also shares YES’s mission to make youth homelessness brief and one-time through mental health care, life skills, employment support, and rapid rehousing. She highlights future plans to expand housing capacity and bring services under one roof through the Welcome Home campaign. A compelling detail: many unhoused youth in Omaha are “couch surfing,” making homelessness largely invisible. YES is expanding from 19 to more than 32 beds to meet growing need. (yesomaha.org)
