When God Asks the Impossible: The Story Behind ‘Virgin Birth’

Produced and directed by K-LOVE’s own staff, K-LOVE is proud to present its first original short film, “Virgin Birth,” a moving depiction of Mary’s journey to faith and surrender as she accepts God’s call to carry the Savior of the world.

Watch for Free

Told through a variety of flashbacks, powerful music and innovative visual imagery, the film opens on a surging thunderstorm, setting the tone for the opposition and temptation Mary will face on her journey to Bethlehem.

As the film progresses, viewers will experience the anticipation and tension of the moment when the mother of Jesus receives a visit from the angel Gabriel, and they’ll follow along as Mary travels to the hill country of Judea, where she finds her cousin expecting the child who will go on to become John the Baptist.

Together, the two women share a bond that carries Mary through the toughest moments of her pregnancy with Jesus, including the moment she realizes she may face scorn and rejection from those in her home community and her eventual reconciliation with Joseph.

With raw authenticity and conviction, Mary steps into the role the Almighty formed just for her – and viewers will be encouraged by the film’s portrayal of courage and trust in God’s plan as they witness the story of redemption and joy unfold in real time, culminating in Jesus’ arrival.

Hear From the Director

“For me, ‘Virgin Birth’ was never about making a Christmas film,” said Dove-award-winning director Daric Gates, Director of Production for K-LOVE On Demand. “It was about trying to understand what it meant for a young woman to be called into something that felt impossible. That is deeply personal for me, because I am constantly faced with circumstances that feel impossible. And the only way through them is to come to the end of myself and surrender to God.

“Surrender can be a scary thing to do. A few years ago, my family and I left Los Angeles during COVID-19. It was not planned. We ended up living with my in-laws in Denver. I had walked away from filmmaking. After almost 15 years in Hollywood chasing something that never quite came together, I figured it was over. I was done. That season was hard. I shed a lot of tears.

“But looking back, I can see that was when God really started working on my heart. That was when I sat down and wrote ‘Virgin Birth.’ At first, I did not know why. But as I got into it, I realized I was not just telling Mary’s and Joseph’s story. I was telling mine. As I wrote, I began to believe that maybe God was not done with me. Maybe the pain and silence had a purpose. That script poured out of me faster than anything I had ever written.

“My hope is that people watch this and do not just see a Biblical event. I hope they see their own story in Mary. ‘Virgin Birth’ isn’t just a Christmas story. It’s a story about what happens when God steps into the middle of our fear, our shame and our failure and asks us to trust Him anyway. That’s what happened to Mary. That’s what happened to Joseph. And that’s what happened to me. That’s what I hope others feel encouraged by, too.”
