From Atheism To Awakening: How One Night At The Theater Changed Everything (+Podcast)

When God Shows Up in Unexpected Places

Sometimes the moment that changes a life forever doesn’t happen in a church. It happens somewhere completely unexpected.

For Adrienne Johnson, it happened during a night at the theater.

Fourteen years ago, Adrienne—who was raised in a secular Jewish home—was a committed atheist… intellect-driven, skeptical of faith, and walking through one of the darkest seasons of her life.

“At that point, I had been an atheist my entire life. I was raised in a secular Jewish family… but I rejected it at a very young age and I had no faith, no God… and I was struggling and depressed and I was suicidal.”

Faith wasn’t part of her worldview. In fact, it made her uncomfortable.

But everything began to shift the night a friend invited her to see a stage production based on "The Screwtape Letters" by C.S. Lewis.

What seemed like a casual outing… became a divine turning point.

A Spark in the Darkness

Adrienne didn’t walk into that theater searching for Jesus.

She went because it sounded like a fun group activity.

“I just knew it was a group activity with my friends… discounted tickets… and I liked theater," Johnson said.

But what she experienced on that stage shook something deep inside her.

A story about spiritual warfare—good versus evil—began to challenge everything she thought she knew.

“I was presented with this incredibly powerful, creative, imaginative display of spiritual warfare… and I had to at least consider Christianity as an option… even though it made me incredibly uncomfortable," she said.

For the first time, she began to consider that her pain… her thoughts… her struggles… might not define her identity.

That realization became the beginning of everything.

Rock Bottom… and a Reluctant Prayer

Before that night, Adrienne had spent years chasing fulfillment in all the wrong places—relationships, attention, success and control.

But none of it filled the emptiness.

“If I could have everything I want and still not be happy… then nothing means anything," she said.

When she hit rock bottom, she was desperate.

And even then… prayer felt impossible.

“I couldn’t even pray… it was too embarrassing… too stupid to pray," Johnson said.

So her first prayer didn’t sound polished or spiritual.

It sounded like this:

“I’m all alone… and I’m only doing this because my sponsor told me to," she recalled.

And yet—even in that raw, reluctant moment—God met her there.

A Journey, Not a Moment

Adrienne’s transformation didn’t happen overnight.

It was a process filled with questions, resistance and wrestling.

“I did not want to come to Jesus… I couldn’t even say His name out loud," she said.

It wasn’t just doubt—it was resistance.

But God continued placing people in her path—mentors, conversations and truth she couldn’t ignore.

Through voices like C. S. Lewis and Tim Keller, her intellectual barriers began to fall.

“God was like… ‘You need me to prove myself logically? Here you go,’” Johnson said.

And slowly… her heart followed.

The Moment Everything Changed

Then one morning, something shifted.

Not dramatically. Not emotionally overwhelming.

But undeniably real.

“If someone asked me, ‘Are you a Christian?’… I think I would have to say yes.”

After years of resistance…

she believed.

Surrender Over Striving

For someone who had spent her life trying to control everything, the biggest transformation came through surrender.

“I could let the ball drop… I could stop trying to be in control… and just let Him be in charge," she said.

Not perfection.

Not performance.

Just surrender.

A Full Circle God Story

Today, Adrienne’s life has come full circle.

She now serves as Director of Development for Fellowship for Performing Arts—the very organization whose production helped lead her to Christ.

“If you had told me 14 years ago that I would become a born-again Christian… and be working for the organization that produced the play that changed my life… I would’ve said, ‘You’re absolutely crazy,’” Johnson said.

The same kind of storytelling that once reached her… she now helps bring to others around the world.

A Message for Anyone Still Searching

Adrienne knows what it feels like to doubt.

To question.

To resist.

And that’s why her message is simple — and powerful:

“Faith requires doubt… if you didn’t doubt, it wouldn’t be faith.”

And if you’re feeling lost today… she offers this starting point:

“Just say… help.”

That’s it.

Two prayers.

Help… and thank you.

Because God Isn’t Finished Yet

“If He can take this suicidal atheist, adulterous Jew… and turn her into a born-again Christian who loves Jesus more than anything… He can do it for anyone," Johnson said.

Then there’s no story too far gone.

No life too broken.

No heart too hardened.

This is a reminder that God can meet you anywhere… even in a theater seat.
