(Northern California) Pastor Tim Russell currently serves as an associate supervisor for the Western District of Foursquare Church International, where his primary focus is developing and growing leaders together on mission, working closely in partnership and support of the district supervisor.

He oversees more than a hundred pastors.

Rather hear the story?

He has faithfully served as a senior pastor in the San Francisco Bay Area for more than three decades. He also serves as Regional Director for the Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center, which is all about empowering underserved and under-resourced communities through entrepreneurship training.

Pastor Tim’s passion is helping individuals discover and live out their God-designed purpose. He is also the author of Conquer or Be Conquered and co-author of Rising from the Ruins, a powerful project sharing his journey of overcoming functional depression. Beyond ministry and community leadership, Pastor Tim is a devoted husband to Vanessa, and together they are raising a beautiful family of seven children.

When asked what he wished people knew about pastors, Pastor Tim shared something deeply honest: pastors go through the same struggles as everyone else. They wrestle with feelings of inadequacy, doubt, and the temptation to rely on their own strength. The difference, he explained, is that pastors carry the responsibility of leading others through transparency while daily surrendering their lives to Christ.

“Everything we teach and preach, we must live out ourselves,” he said. “We don’t wake up automatically surrendered because of our title. We must surrender every single morning, embrace the mercies of God, and trust His Word as our guide.”

He emphasized the danger of pastors being placed on pedestals. While people often expect pastors to be perfect, that mindset creates a trap. “The only one who belongs on the pedestal is Jesus Christ,” he said. “When He’s exalted over the church and in our hearts, we cannot fail.”

When asked what brings him the most joy as a pastor, Tim’s answer was simple: seeing people overcome. Watching lives transformed from brokenness to wholeness fills him with joy.

“It’s like watching someone go from being a cup—needing to be filled—to becoming a pitcher, pouring into others,” he shared. “Seeing people realize they can do all things through Christ, watching them stand with their hands lifted in victory, that fills me with joy.”

When asked how people could pray for him, Pastor Tim didn’t begin with material needs. Instead, he shared his desire for wisdom, strength, and a deeper intimacy with God.

“I want Him,” he said. “I want to behold God and become more like Him. When I walk away from someone, I don’t want them to remember me as a pastor because I told them I was one. I want them to sense that there’s something about me that points them to Christ.”

That, he explained, is his ultimate desire—that people would pray for him to be filled with the fullness of God.

Pastor Timothy Russell is not only a leader in the church and the community, but a man who continues to humbly walk with God while helping others discover their purpose. His heart for transparency, transformation, and intimacy with the Lord is both refreshing and inspiring.
