Las Vegas Woman Helping Families Go From Surviving To Thriving In A New Land (+podcast)

(Las Vegas, Nevada)  In a world that can often feel divided, stories of compassion and action shine a much-needed light. One of those bright lights is Cindy Trussel, founder and CEO of Lighthouse Charities in Las Vegas.

Her mission is simple, yet powerful: to help vulnerable and displaced individuals rebuild their lives with dignity, self-sufficiency, and hope.

Rather hear the conversation?

Cindy’s journey didn’t begin with a grand plan—it began with a simple “yes.”

After seeing a plea for help on social media from a local school overwhelmed by the needs of refugee families, she stepped in. Within just two weeks, Cindy helped create a clothing closet and food pantry for students—meeting immediate needs for essentials like shoes, coats, and meals.

But she quickly realized something deeper: meeting needs for today wouldn’t solve the problems of tomorrow.

That moment became the foundation for Lighthouse Charities.

Now in its 11th year, Lighthouse Charities has served tens of thousands of individuals through a holistic, empowering approach. Instead of temporary relief, the organization focuses on long-term transformation.

Families who arrive are met with a plan—and a promise:

  • English classes to break language barriers
  • Job training and real employment opportunities
  • Support navigating everyday life in a new country
  • A community that walks alongside them

Through Lighthouse’s social enterprises, individuals are not only supported—they’re employed. They earn wages, gain experience, and rebuild confidence in a safe, grace-filled environment where learning curves are expected.

It’s not charity—it’s partnership.

As an immigrant herself, Cindy understands firsthand the challenges of starting over.

Imagine walking into a grocery store and not recognizing a single item. Trying to enroll your child in school without understanding the language. Navigating transportation, healthcare, and employment without a support system.

For many families, the hardest part isn’t just what they’ve left behind—it’s the absence of community.

That’s where Lighthouse steps in, helping individuals rebuild not just their lives, but their sense of belonging.

One powerful example is Ezra, a woman from Iraq who arrived unable to speak English. Despite holding a degree in agricultural engineering, she had never been allowed to work in her home country.

Today, she leads a four-acre farm through Lighthouse, teaching others hydroponics, harvesting, and retail skills. Her journey—from restriction to leadership—is a testament to what’s possible when opportunity meets determination.

Stories like Ezra’s are not the exception—they’re the heartbeat of Lighthouse.

Cindy emphasizes that compassion often grows from understanding. Many of the women served by Lighthouse have fled unimaginable circumstances—war, persecution, and loss. In fact, over 75% of displaced people worldwide are women and children.

Yet their dreams are strikingly familiar:

  • To raise their children in safety
  • To work and provide for their families
  • To worship freely
  • To live with dignity

“They’re not asking for much,” Cindy shares. “Just the chance to live a normal life.”

For Cindy and her team, this work isn’t just a job—it’s a calling.

Every morning, they wake up knowing lives are being changed. Families are finding stability. Individuals are discovering purpose. And hope is being restored—one story at a time.
