When was the last time you were struck by something beautiful? This scripture is a beautiful prompt for us today to get back to some childlike wonder.
It comes out of Habakkuk 3, verse 2. It says this: "I have heard all about You, LORD. I am filled with awe by Your amazing works."
The word "awestruck" seems like such a big one. It is more than just, well, that's pretty cool—or liking somebody's post because the colors were just right.
Being awestruck is being transfixed, meaning your eyes are locked on something because it's so beautiful. Think about the mountains when you see the sun rising. Or when you're at the ocean and you see the fog layer rolling in—the massiveness of that cloud. Or if you're out in the middle of nowhere and you look up at the sky in the middle of the night and you see more stars than you've ever seen. All of these things demand our attention. But in a world filled with quick scrolling and swiping, we can miss the wonder.
There's No Bottom to Awe
There's something endless about awe and wonder. There's no way we can fully reach an understanding of who God is. In our world, we can reach a lot of understanding about a lot of things—and to be honest, I think that's where we lose our creativity, when we take what's been given to us and think, that's it. But when was the last time you slowed down to just look at the works of God's hands? Or to think about how He made a way out of an impossible situation you couldn't handle on your own?
Like a Child at the Fireworks
When was the last time you allowed yourself to be like a child? I remember growing up, my sister and I went to Disney World with my family. If you're familiar with the experience, at the end of every night behind the castle there are fireworks. We stood there not knowing what to expect because it was our first time. When we saw the fireworks explode in the sky with what looked like palm branches coming off of a tree, and then a Mickey Mouse head pop up in the sky with three different fireworks going off—all in bright colors and loud noises and music—we couldn't break away. We were transfixed, in awe of what we were seeing. Now take that experience and amplify it by God.
Step Away and Look Up
When was the last time you slowed down and allowed yourself to be in childlike wonder and awe at what God has done—to the point where you don't even want to blink? Because the moment you close your eyes, you've missed just that much of who God is. I would encourage you today to step away from your computer, step away from your cell phone, step away from everything, and allow yourself to be in awe at the stars in the sky. Take some time to just be with God and let Him overwhelm you with His beauty.
