"God is good all the time." And then you would say, "And all the time..." And I would say, "God is good." That's a phrase that we say often as Christians, and rightly so. God is good. And that's easy to say when life is going the way you want it to go.
But what about when life is not going the way we want it? Do we still say God is good?
When Life Gets Hard
Here's the context of this verse. David is in trouble. He had friends who have betrayed him. He has people who want him dead, and they have risen up against him. And Psalm chapter 86 is his cry out to God. And then right in the middle of that Psalm is our verse here, verse 10.
So in the middle of all of those circumstances, David affirms that "God, you are great and you perform wonderful deeds." That wasn't made out of some peaceful sanctuary that David was in. That was made while he was in a furnace of affliction. Here's the point, and here's the point for us: Life around him was bad, but God is good.
There used to be a t-shirt that people would wear, and it used to bug me. It said "Life is good." And I'd see Christians wearing that shirt, and I would think to myself, "A lot of times life is not good." A better shirt would be "God is good." And God's not just good when life is good. God is good no matter what. God is good when life is bad.
The Truth We Need to Remember
Do you know that? That's true, Christian, pause. Do you know and believe that no matter what is going on in your life, no matter what is going on around you, God is good? Life may not be good—sometimes it's not. But God is always good.
If you've got trouble at home, you've got trouble in your own heart, you've got trouble at work, you've got trouble with friends—trouble is unavoidable. But God never changes. God is always good. And so David says, "You are great." Out of his trouble, he says, "You are great and you perform wonderful deeds."
God's Wonderful Deeds
The longer I've been walking with God, the more I know this to be true. I've learned it's true from reading God's Word, and I find story after story about God's wonderful deeds. And I look in my own life, and I can recount how many wonderful deeds God has done in my life.
If you have time, pause after you watch this short video. And would you consider what wonderful deeds God has done? I had a bad week last week. It was terrible in some ways, and right in the middle, God brought me three men at three different times who said almost the exact same thing, and it encouraged me and it gave me some strength that I desperately needed.
Now who sent those guys to me? We know God sent those guys to me. God performed a wonderful deed. Consider what God is doing in your life right now, and then with a full heart, say with David, "You are great and perform wonderful deeds. You alone are God."
