I love this verse because David expresses a confidence in God. He uses words like I know, I will, I will not. There's so much confidence in the character of God.
The first thing he says is this: I know the Lord is always with me, and this is just a beautiful promise that we have as believers that God is Emmanuel, God with us. It's really the promise of the Gospel that no matter what we go through, we have a God that's present in our pain. In times where we doubt the goodness of God, He's with us.
He says, I know the Lord is always with me. Then he says, I will not be shaken, for He is right beside me. You know, the ESV says, I have set the Lord always before me. I love that the Lord is always before David. In other words, the Lord is first in his life.
Making God First
My prayer is that when people look at my life, they can say, based on how you spend your money, your time, your energy, how you treat your wife and your kids, I can tell that the Lord is first in your life. That's my prayer, that when people look at the way that I order my life, the way I prioritize my life, that God is first.
Here's what happens when we have the right priorities in our lives, when God is before us: we're going to have a firm foundation. He says, I will not be shaken, for He is right beside me. Our foundation will not be shaken when the Lord goes before us.
Now, not everybody can say that. If the Lord doesn't go before me and I'm trusting in my efforts, my money, or my career, then I don't have a firm foundation and I can't make the statement that says, I will not be shaken. But the reason David makes this statement, I will not be shaken, is because God is first in his life.
Guard Your Time With God
We've all seen foundations just crushed. We wonder, how did this person drift from the faith? I thought they had a firm foundation. I want to encourage you to build on the Word of God. The primary way that we build a firm foundation is we let the Word of God lead us. We get in a good Gospel-centered church. We surround ourselves with believers that will speak truth into our lives. The way we build a firm foundation is by developing a prayer life.
In fact, one of the things that I love to do is I set an appointment with God every day. Just like I make appointments to get coffee with my buddies or whoever, I make an appointment with God. I'm very careful to guard that appointment. If somebody calls me and they say, hey, what are you doing at 4 p.m.? I'm like, I got an appointment. And I do, because I have an appointment with God, and I'm very careful to guard that time.
Why? Because that's how I build a firm foundation. If God is first in my life, I'm going to spend time with Him. I'm going to value His Word. I'm going to value the church. Why? Because I want to build on a firm foundation, and I want to say, like David, I will not be shaken.
David says, I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for He is right beside me.
