Ben Fuller admits his story would have unfolded differently if he was the one holding the pen on “If It Was Up To Me.” The Vermont native’s latest single hails from his acclaimed album, “Walk Through Fire,” and features 16-time Academy of Country Music (ACM) Award winner Carrie Underwood.

Adding Underwood’s unmistakable vocal to the country-grounded confession elevates Fuller’s original song to an entirely new level, offering two different perspectives on the way surrender leads to a better story as, together, they admit, “I’d never know how good Your plans could be, if it was up to me.”

“When I wrote this song, I kept thinking about how difficult life can be, and that if I was in control, and it was up to me, I’d make it a lot easier on myself — but I’d never know then how good God’s plans can be,” shares Fuller, who crafted the selection with Ben Glover and Jeff Sojka. “I’m so grateful Carrie wanted to share her love for Jesus on a song with me. She was so kind and calm when we were in the studio. And I’m pretty sure I smiled almost as big as God did when she stepped up to the mic that day.”

The experience was just as memorable for the country chart-topper with Underwood remarking, “Ben is such a talented singer and songwriter, and I love the joy he brings to singing about his faith, which we have in common. I was honored when he asked me to sing with him on ‘If It Was Up To Me,’ and I love how our voices blend on such a positive and uplifting song.”

The pair debuted the poignant duet live for the first time at the Grand Ole Opry before bringing it to life on the GMA Dove Awards stage in 2025.

“If It Was Up To Me” isn’t the first time Underwood has partnered with a Christian artist on a recording. Outspoken about her faith, the “American Idol” alum has previously collaborated with CeCe Winans, NEEDTOBREATHE and Michael W. Smith.

Fuller, who is set to get married next month, is currently headlining “The Black Sheep Tour” through the end of October.
