'Living Room Worship' Offers Students A Space For Authentic Fellowship

As more young adults return to church, seeking in-person community and spiritual grounding, Cedarville University students are building that kind of space on campus through Living Room Worship, a stage-free gathering centered on prayer, singing and fellowship.

National Research Shows Gen Z and Millennials Seeking Church Community

Recent national research from the Barna Group and Gloo’s State of the Church initiative points to what it calls a “historic reversal” in attendance patterns: Gen Z and millennials are now the most regular churchgoers, outpacing older generations. Barna reports Gen Z churchgoers average about 1.9 services a month, or about 23 services a year, and notes that Gen Z and millennials have moved from just over one weekend per month in 2020 to nearly two in 2025.

Living Room Worship Creates a Stage-Free Space for Prayer, Singing and Rest

Balancing academics, personal growth and the pressures of adulthood can leave little room for rest. Living Room Worship is designed to give students a place to slow down, connect and worship together in a setting that feels personal and unforced. Living Room Worship meets every other Sunday at 8 p.m. Students can follow the group’s Instagram account for details, updates and locations.

At Living Room Worship, vulnerability, prayer and fellowship take priority over performance. Instead of stage lights, lamps glow softly as students gather to sing, pray and share, creating a space where rejoicing and weeping are met with compassion rather than judgement. Between songs, students pray for one another — sometimes for burdens they have carried quietly all week.

Cedarville Student Nate Weidner Helped Launch Living Room Worship

Nate Weidner, a senior studying business management from Fort Thomas, Kentucky, said he still remembers the simple, heartfelt worship nights he had with Young Life and College Life in high school.

“Those were some of the most beautiful times of singing to the Lord and worshiping Him,” said Weidner.

During his first two years at Cedarville, Weidner repeatedly heard students express a desire for regular worship nights outside traditional daily chapel services. After praying about it, he said he felt God leading him to help create a space where students could worship together and be known.

“During my sophomore year, I was serving in a summer ministry,” said Weidner.  They asked, ‘What’s your immeasurably more?’ I remember having this prayer: 200 Cedarville students greeting one another in love, then rallying to worship Jesus freely together.”

How Parker Satre Helped Build the Cedarville Worship Gathering

That next semester, Weidner asked his friend Parker Satre, a junior business management major from Greenwood, Indiana, to help launch the sessions.

“I love worshiping, so I thought that this could be awesome,” said Satre. “When Nate asked me to join, I was thinking more logistical. How many and what songs should we sing? Worshiping is one of my favorite things, so I wanted to make sure we get the beginning right.”

Living Room Worship Grows From a Small Group to More Than 100 Students

What began as a dozen friends has grown into more than 100 students gathering across campus.

The sessions give students a chance to step away from the pressure to be impressive and simply be present — with God and with each other. With three singers, a cajon, keyboard and guitar, the lamp-lit session serves as a low-key setting meant to feel safe, personal and welcoming.
