In an effort to equip students and lifelong learners with strong pro-life arguments, Cedarville University will be offering the Theological Foundations of Human Life course as part of the Defending Life Summer Institute. The three-credit hour course begins May 8 and concludes July 21, with a week of on-campus classes June 12-16.

Cedarville is partnering with leaders in the pro-life community, including John Ensor, president of PassionLife.

“This is a course where bioethics, abortion, and the Church all come into focus as we examine biblical theology which informs our thinking, and biblical ethics, which guide our actions,” said Ensor, who is teaching this summer’s course. “Leading well on abortion starts with the Bible and produces a people who will courageously and compassionately defend the innocent...”

This course offers a unique opportunity for pro-life advocates to learn from experts in the field.

“John Ensor’s courageous commitment to protect children in the womb is international and has, at times, been done at substantial personal risk,” said Marc Newman, president of Speaker for Life. “Come to Cedarville University and learn to defend life from someone who is not only a deep thinker about the theology of life, but also someone with real ‘boots on the ground’ experience.”

Cedarville University is only the second university in the United States to offer an academic program that is comparable to the Defending Life Summer Institute’s course.

There is a severe lack among evangelical circles of the proper tools to defend the pro-life argument.

“This course is intended for anyone who seeks to understand the pro-life argument,” said Andrew Harris, associate professor of communication at Cedarville University, and an advocate for the pro-life movement. “There’s a lot of misinformation about the argument, and it clouds the understanding of someone who is staunchly pro-life. We have a hard time understanding what the argument is.”

This year marks the second time the Defending Life Summer Institute has been offered at Cedarville University.

“The class did so much beyond training me only in the pro-life arena,” noted Allison Detwiller, a sophomore communication student who participated in the first program on campus. “I learned how to think critically and present professionally.”
