As Senior Pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship and Founder of The Urban Alternative, his impact has reached millions through sermons, books, and broadcasts. Now, as he steps into a new chapter of ministry, Dr. Evans is showing what it looks like to live both Unbound and Unleashed, free from the limits of culture and fully released to carry God’s Kingdom to the world.

A Season of Renewal and Legacy
When we reconnected, it felt like no time had passed.
“I’m honored to be with you,” Dr. Evans said warmly. “You are a special person to me.”
It’s been years since my days as a Dallas news anchor and even longer since I sat at his family’s Thanksgiving table—but his humility and humor are unchanged.
Today, Dr. Evans’ ministry has expanded far beyond the pulpit, and so has his family’s legacy. His daughter Priscilla Shirer is a world-renowned evangelist and author. Jonathan Evans, a former NFL player, now serves as associate pastor at Oak Cliff. Crystal Hurst leads women’s ministry and writes best-selling books, while Anthony Evans inspires through worship and music.
“We never told them they had to go into ministry,” he said. “It just flowed naturally from being around the work of the Lord. To see them use their gifts to advance God’s Kingdom—it’s one of life’s greatest fulfillments.”

Unleashed: Releasing God’s Kingdom in and Through You
In his latest book, "Unleashed: Releasing God’s Kingdom in and Through You," Dr. Evans invites believers to stop compartmentalizing their faith and start living under God’s full authority.
“God’s purpose in history is His glory through the advancement of His Kingdom,” he explained. “The Kingdom means the rule of God. Too many Christians have made Him a spare tire—close enough if something goes flat, but not ruling every part of their lives.”
"Unleashed" helps readers integrate God into every decision, relationship, and daily moment.
“When we erase the false distinction between the secular and the sacred,” he said, “and make everything sacred, God’s Spirit begins to water the seed of His Kingdom in us—and that Kingdom grows through us.”
He believes that when believers live this way, chaos no longer has the final word.
“Chaos will come,” he said. “But the beauty of God’s Kingdom is that it overrules.”
Unbound: Truth That Cannot Be Contained
Dr. Evans’ new "Unbound" podcast, debuting November 11, builds on the same heartbeat: God’s truth cannot be confined by culture, time, or circumstance. The title comes straight from Scripture:
“John 10:35 says the Scripture cannot be broken,” he shared. “Second Timothy 2:9 says the Word of God cannot be held hostage. That means it’s unbound—it cannot be canceled, confined, or stopped because it’s the very voice of God in print.”
Each episode features honest, unscripted conversations with today’s most influential Christian voices—from Lecrae to Ruth Chou Simons—exploring how the Holy Spirit moves in everyday life.
“There are so many versions of ‘my truth,’” he said. “But people need to know blood truth—the truth that comes from Christ, not culture.”
And this time, listeners get to hear a different side of him.
“We laugh, we joke, we cry. People will see a side of me they haven’t before. It’s all designed to help people feel the truth, not just hear it.”

Reaching the Next Generation
Dr. Evans’ hope is that "Unbound" and "Unleashed" together will speak to a generation rediscovering faith in an age of noise and confusion.
“This generation wants truth. They just don’t always know where to find it,” he said. “God’s Word should not, cannot, and ought not be held hostage to what’s happening around us. If you’re holding on to the Word of God, you already have truth—now let people see what truth looks and feels like.”
His message to church leaders is clear:
“God is flexible with forms but inflexible with truth. To reach this generation, we must speak authentically, unveil ourselves, and address what they’re hearing in the culture—affirm what’s legitimate and clarify what’s not.”
A Pastor’s Heart and a Servant’s Perspective
Having pastored Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship for nearly 50 years, Dr. Evans understands the weight pastors carry and the importance of legacy.
“When God wants to do something new, He often disrupts the natural order,” he said, reflecting on transitioning leadership to his son Jonathan. “We didn’t plan for it to happen this fast, but God allowed some disturbances to bring it about. It’s been wonderful watching him lead and seeing how God’s message keeps expanding.”
He encourages other pastors not to wait until crisis demands transition:
“Think in terms of succession long before it’s required. God always wants continuity in His Kingdom.”
He also reminds congregations to show tangible care:
“Pastors give and give,” he said. “So bless them and their wives in ways they can touch—a meal, a weekend away, a gift that says, ‘We see you.’ That kind of care renews the heart.”

From Loss to Renewal
Dr. Evans has lived the truths he teaches. After losing his wife of nearly 50 years, Lois, to cancer in 2019—and navigating grief during the start of the pandemic—he’s learned firsthand how God meets people in disruption.
“When God shakes things up, it’s to reveal His unshakable Kingdom,” he shared. “When He disrupts your life, go deeper. Look for the new thing He’s doing.”
Now remarried, he and his wife share a testimony of God’s unexpected redemption.
“Grace is phenomenal,” he said. “God’s curveballs still come with His purpose attached.”
The God Who Can’t Be Second
For those who feel spiritually stuck, Dr. Evans offers this encouragement:
“God is closer than you think and closer than you feel. There are things God can’t do—He can’t lie, He can’t change, He can’t learn anything new, and He can’t be second. Start your day by saying, ‘God, You can own me today.’ And don’t be shocked when He takes advantage of that invitation.”

Truth Without Limits
Whether through a book, sermon, or podcast microphone, Dr. Evans continues to remind us that God’s Word is eternal, relevant, and alive.
“My prayer is that people will discover there’s something in God’s Word for them, no matter who they are, where they are, or what stage they’re in. God’s Word is truth for every generation.”
As we ended our conversation, he laughed and said, “Good to talk to you twice in one day!” It was the perfect reflection of this new season—joyful, purposeful, and deeply rooted in the unshakable truth of God’s Kingdom.
