In the heart of Hillsborough, the Washington County Hope Center shines as a beacon for families navigating hardship.
Under the compassionate leadership of Adam Harvey—a man with a pastor’s heart and a servant’s vision—the Hope Center has grown into far more than just a place for food assistance. It’s a transformative space where dignity is restored, hope is rekindled, and lives are truly changed.

I first met Adam a few years ago, during my time as a board member and PR Chair for the Salvation Army’s Cascade Division in Portland. Now, as K-LOVE’s National News Anchor, it was both a joy and a privilege to reconnect—and to witness firsthand the incredible work God is doing through his faithful leadership.
Adam stepped into the role of Director two years ago, combining his passion for pastoring with a deep commitment to restoring dignity to those who feel forgotten. Under his guidance, the Hope Center has become a life-giving community for thousands of families facing poverty, food insecurity, and homelessness.
“We want to meet people where they are,” Adam told me. “But we don’t want to leave them there.”

That heart shows in every part of the Hope Center’s mission—from the Pathway of Hope program, which helps families break cycles of generational poverty, to a brand-new Mobile Food Pantry that delivers meals and resources directly to rural communities beyond the reach of public transit.
One of the most exciting developments is the upcoming Client Choice Pantry—a grocery store-style experience that replaces the traditional food box. Instead of receiving a pre-packed selection, families will be able to choose their own items—many of them culturally specific—creating an experience that affirms both dignity and autonomy.
“When families walk in, I want them to feel like something here looks like home,” Adam said. “Less waste, more dignity—and a chance to build real relationships.”
He shared the story of a woman who, after receiving food and learning about the center’s Christmas assistance, broke down in tears in the parking lot.
“I’ve been from place to place,” she told him, “but today I feel seen. I feel like there’s hope.”
Moments like these define the Hope Center—not just as a service provider, but as a community where futures are rebuilt and hope is made tangible.

With more than 47,000 people living below the poverty line in Washington County, the need is great—but so is the opportunity to make a difference. Adam and his team rely on volunteers, community partners, and generous donors to keep this vision alive.
“We’re creating a place where generous people can be generous,” Adam says. “And we know how to put those resources to good work.”
To see the Hope Center becoming what Adam once envisioned—it’s more than fulfilling. It’s faith in action. Lives are being transformed. Communities are being served with grace. And hope isn’t just a word on a banner—it’s something people carry home with them.
