Surviving Job Loss

God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. - Psalm 46:1 NLT

When we bought our first home, I was working as a construction manager. I was one of three managers hired to keep up with the demand for custom homes. I might have been building custom homes, but my wife and I purchased a non-custom, track home within our budget. We were just excited that we were finally at a place in life where we could stop renting! I remember the day we signed the papers. We went out for a special dinner to celebrate afterward. We could hardly wait for our house to be completed in six months so we could move in.

Two days after closing on our first house, my boss called me into his office. By the look on his face, I could tell he didn’t have good news. Unfortunately, I was right. He laid me off that day, explaining that while they had to cut costs, he had complete confidence in my ability to get another job very quickly. “You’ll be picked up by someone else, I’m sure of it!” he said. To be honest, I wasn’t sure at all. Suddenly, I was committed to a mortgage payment and found myself unemployed.

I was so terrified of telling my wife the bad news that I left for work the next two mornings and pretended I was going to the office. In reality, a foreman who worked for me—a fellow brother in Christ—took the next two days off and commiserated with me. He finally convinced me to be honest with my wife and let her know I was out of a job. To her credit, she handled the news well. She, too, said she believed in me.

I’ve learned over the years that our Heavenly Father also believes in us. He believes in the good gifts He’s given us and the training-through-trials He’s allowed us to experience so that we can move confidently into the future He’s planned for us. We just need to trust Him.

“Is anything too hard for the Lord?”

In Genesis 18:14 God proclaims, “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” I’ve often asked this question whenever I’ve encountered difficult times. Is this day in my life too hard for the Lord? Is this habit I’m trying to break too hard for Him? Is this mountain too big for Him to move?

Remember, nothing is ever too hard for the Lord.

Dig Deeper

1. What situation are you struggling with right now that you think is too hard? Next, go to God in prayer with it and listen for what He has to say about going through it, with Him.

2. Is there someone who believes in you, despite your struggle? Take time to talk with that person today and tell them how you’re really feeling.
