Fruit of the Spirit: Self-Control

Self-control allows us to say no to ourselves when everything in us wants to say yes. Self-control keeps us from trading what we want most for what we want now. Self-control allows us to make the hard decisions during the hard times of life, so we don’t do something now that we’ll regret later.

Heavenly Father, I know you want me to have self-control. Sometimes I let my thoughts and feelings get the best of me, and I say and do things that I regret. Please teach me how to stay in control of my emotions through the power of the Holy Spirit. Make me into a person who is not controlled by my desires but by you. Please help me to live and act in a way that brings honor to you.

A Prayer for Proverbs 25:28

“A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls.”

Lord God, thank you for your promise to always be there for me no matter what comes my way. I realize the temptations in my life are no different from what others experience. I know you are faithful and will not allow me to be tempted more than I can stand. When temptation comes my way, please give me the wisdom to recognize it, the eyes to see the way out, and the courage to take it.

A Prayer for 1 Corinthians 10:13

“The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.”

God, you have not given me a spirit of fear but a spirit of power, love, and self-control. When I’m tempted to go off the narrow path, give me your strength to say no. May, I fall so in love with you that the temptations in this life pale in comparison to what I have with you. Please give me the self-control to keep my eyes on Jesus.

A Prayer for 2 Timothy 1:7

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.”

Lord, I’m not always a patient person. Sometimes the things that people say and do get under my skin. When I sense those feelings rising inside of me, please remind me of how patient you’ve been with me. May that trigger me to get on my knees and come to you. Please show me what I need at that moment and teach me how to find that in you.

A Prayer for Proverbs 16:32

“Better to be patient than powerful; better to have self-control than to conquer a city.”

Father, you are a good God. Thank you for loving me enough to send your son, spirit, and Scriptures to guide me in life. Lord, I want to run my race in a way that glorifies you. Please teach me how to discipline myself spiritually to run with purpose in every step. I don’t want to miss out on what you wish for me. When I get tired and discouraged, please help me to find rest and strength in you. May I not lose sight of what you’ve done for me and the promises you have ahead of me.

A Prayer for 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

“Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win! All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. So, I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadow boxing.”

Heavenly Father, as a believer, I know the enemy would like nothing more than to see me fall away from you. I don’t want to give him any victory in my life. Please show me how to pay close attention to my life, so I continue to walk in step with you. I know I’m not perfect, and I know you don’t expect me to be. Please help me abide in you to shine a light to everyone in my world how awesome you indeed are. On the days when I miss the mark, may I not beat myself up. Reveal to me what steps I need to take and help me take them, so I am not weighed down by guilt and shame because that is not what you want for me.

A Prayer for 1 Peter 5:8

“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.”

Lord God, thank you for setting me apart and adopting me into your family. What a privilege it is to be a child of yours! How amazing is it that you paid the price for all the guilt and sin in my life. I never want to take that for granted! Please help me not to copy the behavior and customs of this world. Transform me into a new person by changing the way I think. Please show me your good and pleasing and perfect will for my life.

A Prayer for Romans 12:2

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”

Lord, I don’t want to live for myself. I want to live for you. Please help me turn away from the things in this life that go against your will for my life. Show me to live in my world today with wisdom, righteousness, and solid and unshakeable devotion to you. Thank you that I don’t have to do this in my strength, but I have your spirit to fill me up. May I be filled with more and more of you each day.

A Prayer for Titus 2:12

“And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God.”
