8 Prayers for Thanksgiving

The Thanksgiving holiday arrives as a time to give thanks and praise, but doing so requires a certain amount of humility. Thankfully, God gives grace to the humble.

And he gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6

More specifically, thanks to God helps change our attitude while realizing the bountiful blessings we have today and all year long. Here are 8 prayers to help us cultivate gratitude and fill our hearts with joy this Thanksgiving season and beyond.

God of gods, difficulties cloud my judgment and rob me of my joy. Forgive me for failing to believe that You are always good and that Your love endures forever. Give me faith in Your Word as I give thanks to You. May I know Your love that lasts forever. Amen.

Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! His faithful love endures forever. Give thanks to the God of gods. His faithful love endures forever. Give thanks to the Lord of lords. His faithful love endures forever.

– Psalm 136:1-3 NLT

Heavenly Father, You are the King of Heaven and Earth. I come into Your presence in the name of Jesus with thanksgiving in my heart. I enter Your company with praise to Your mighty name. May I always have a heart filled with gratitude for everything You have done and will do in my life. Amen.

Enter His gates with thanksgiving; go into His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him and praise His name.

– Psalm 100:4 NLT

Dear Lord, I am wholly Yours, and my heart is filled with thanksgiving as I consider the sweet perfume of the Gospel You entrusted to me. May my prayers of praise rise to heaven and be a pleasing aroma to You as I gratefully remember the sacrifice of Your Son. In Jesus’ name, amen.

But thank God! He has made us His captives and continues to lead us along in Christ's triumphal procession. Now He uses us to spread the knowledge of Christ everywhere, like a sweet perfume.

– 2 Corinthians 2:14 NLT

God, alert my mind and give me a heart of thanksgiving as I come to You in prayer. May I be faithful to come to You daily in prayer. May my attitude always be grateful as I look to You as the Author and Perfector of my faith. Amen.

Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.

– Colossians 4:2 NLT

Lord, You are good, and Your love endures forever. I thank You for my friends and family that I get to gather all together with. I can’t imagine having to part with any of them yet Your great love for us led You to sacrifice Your Son to die on my behalf. Thank You that my salvation is secure by faith that comes from You. In Jesus

Praise the LORD! Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! His faithful love endures forever.

– Psalm 106:1 NLT

Most High God, my heart is filled with grateful songs of praise. You love me in the morning and are faithful to me in the evening. I thank You for Your unfailing love and the confidence I can have in You. Thank You for the hope of resurrection and the promise of eternity with You. Amen.

It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to the Most High. It is good to proclaim Your unfailing love in the morning, Your faithfulness in the evening.

– Psalm 92:1-2 NLT

God, trouble is near. May I have joy when my faith is tested, and may I endure so I can grow. Thank You for giving me confidence, and thank You for giving me everything that I need to be able to survive. I pray that I will be found to be perfect and complete in You. Amen.

Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

– James 1:2-4 NLT

Lord, my days are filled with activities during this holiday season. Give me a thankful heart filled with songs of praise to You in all that I do. May the message about Christ fill my life, and I pray that You will give me wisdom in all that I do and speak. Amen.

Let the message about Christ fill your lives in all its richness. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom He gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

- Colossians 3:16-17 NLT
